Action on Rapid Alert Notification by European Union and Exporting of imported pepper as Malabar Garbled
(MG-1)

As per the Rapid Alert Notification dated May 9th 2003, issued by the European Union, consignments of chilli powder exported by the following firms to France have been detained on account of reported presence of a prohibited colourant “Sudan-1”.

Their certificates of registration as exporter of spices have been suspended for a period of 45 days effective from 13th & 20th June, 2003 pending a decision regarding cancellation of their registration.

The Spices Board of India has suspended the certificate of registration of the following exporters exporting imported pepper as Malabar Garbled (MG-1) and Tellicherry Garbled Extra Bold (TGEB) for a period of 45 days, effective from 20.6.2003 pending a decision regarding cancellation of their registration.

  PRESS RELEASE

A recent decision of the European Union, published as 2003/460/EC dated 20.6.2003 has put into effect the following emergency measures with respect to hot chilli and hot chilli products:

1.

Member States shall prohibit the import of hot chilli and hot chilli products defined in Article 1 unless an analytical report accompanying the consignment demonstrates that the product does not contain Sudan red 1 (CAS Nr. 842-07-09).

2.

The competent authorities in the Member States shall check that each consignment of hot chilli and hot chilli products presented for importation is accompanied by a report as provided for in paragraph 1.

3.

In the absence of such an analytical report, the importer established in the Community shall have the product tested to demonstrate that it does not contain Sudan red Pending availability of the analytical report, the product shall be detained under official supervision.

Hence all exporters of chilli and chilli products from India should ensure that the analytical report required by the European Union accompanies consignments of hot chilli and hot chilli products.
