Cardamom award was
instituted by the Spices Board to recognize and encourage growers who
have achieved outstanding productivity in cardamom. The award consists
of one first prize and two second prizes. The first prize carries a
cash award of Rs.25,000/-, a citation and a certificate. Each second
prize carries a cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a citation and a certificate.
The winners of the Cardamom Award for the year 2002 & 2003 were
selected based on the nominations received and verified during 2002-03
& 2003-04 seasons respectively. |

Shri P. N.Surulivel is a progressive
cardamom grower owning a small holding of 0.40 hectare in Chakkupallom
Village in Idukki District of Kerala. The productivity of this holding
replanted in 2000 was 3250 Kgs. of dry cardamom per hectare. |

maintenance of soil fertility through judicious application of organic
manures and systematic soil and moisture conservation practices helped
him in reaching the coveted position of the best cardamom grower during

Shri Shaji Joseph is a small grower
owning 1.80 hectare of land in Chakkupallom village in Idukki District
of Kerala. During 1999 he replanted an area of 0.80 hectare with high
yielding variety of cardamom. During the year 2002-03 he achieved a
productivity of 2875 Kgs. dry cardamom per hectare. |

Effective soil and water conservation, application of organic manures, regular weeding, judicious irrigation and timely plant protection measures are the factors which contributed to his success. |

||
Shri H.R.Balakrishna is a small grower owning one hectare of cardamom land in Hassan District of Karnataka. He replanted the area during 1999 with high yielding variety. Productivity obtained by him during 2002-03 was 1270 Kg/ha. of dry cardamom. |

grower owning a small holding of 0.67 hectare in Anavilasom Village
in Idukki District of Kerala. The productivity of the holding replanted
in 2000 was 3580 kg/hectare of dry cardamom. |

of land in Chakkupallom Village in Idukki District of Kerala. During
the year 2003-04 they achieved a productivity of 3120 Kgs dry cardamom
per hectare. |
