The Large Cardamom
Awards were instituted by the Spices Board in 1996 to recognise and
encourage growers who have achieved high level of productivity. The
award consists of one first prize and two second prizes. The first prize
carries a cash award of Rs. 25,000/- a citation and certificate. Each
second prize carries a cash award of Rs. 15,000/- a citation and certificate.
Winners for the award 2002 and 2003 were selected on the basis of nominations
filed and verified in 2002-03 and 2003-04 respectively. |

Shri Nar Bahadur Tamling is a small
but progressive farmer from West Sikkim owning an yielding area of 0.80
hectare. During the year his production was 1428 Kg. of dry cardamom
per hectare. This commendable achievement in productivity was obtained
by him through adoption of proper practices, namely, replanting with
high yielding varieties, sprinkler irrigation and regular cultural operations
like weeding, mulching, trashing and shade regulation. |

Shri Nima Sherpa is a
small but progressive farmer from Darjeeling owning an area of 1.20
hectare. During the year his production was 1067 Kg. of dry cardamom
per hectare. This commendable achievement in productivity was obtained
by him through adoption of proper practices, namely, replanting with
high yielding varieties, sprinkler irrigation and regular cultural operations
like weeding, mulching, trashing and shade regulation. |

hectare. During the year his production was 804 Kg. of dry cardamom
per ha. This commendable achievement in productivity was obtained by

yielding varieties, sprinkler irrigation and regular cultural operations
like weeding, mulching, trashing and shade regulation. |

is a progressive farmer and active social worker from the remote tribal
area of North Sikkim owning an yielding area of 1.50 hectare. During
the year his production was 900 Kg. of dry cardamom per hectare. He
attributes his success to selection of high yielding varieties, timely
cultural operations and judicious irrigation during summer. |

Shri Lafuti Sherpa is
a progressive small grower from East Sikkim owning an area of 1.50 hectare.
During the year he produced 702 Kg. of dry cardamom per hectare. Adoption
of appropriate cultural practices like weeding, mulching, trashing,
shade regulation and application of organic inputs are factors responsible
for this tremendous achievement in productivity. |
